"It's been a while since I've been that blown away by a band. Utterly astonishingly fantastic!!!"

(Gareth Turner, Little Johnny England & Phil Beer band)

We at Folk in the Barn are thrilled to be hosting a concert for this legendary Band and are so pleased to welcome back John Tams to the Cathedral Lodge once more.

The reunion of this classic band is due to the recent discovery of some previously unheard live recordings made by their former sound engineer. These recordings, made at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1986, exhibit a power and commitment that was never fully captured in the studio, so a live album release immediately became inevitable. With an album to promote, live performances were the obvious next step.

So, with everyone truly inspired by the might of these recorded performances, Home Service is once again back in business.

The reformed band, in virtually it’s original lineup, has for two years enjoyed dozens of major gigs, and their reformation has proved to be a thoroughly resounding success, receiving ecstatic ovations from audiences, old and new alike.
The illustrious line- up is of course headed by the outstanding John Tams, whose career has spanned four decades in every performance medium.
Described by Mojo magazine as: “One of the ultimate British songwriters,” he is a former member of the Albion Band and Home Service and six times winner of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
He has worked as actor and musical director at the National Theatre and in the West End, on over 30 productions, including most recently the International hit War Horse.  And is probably most widely known for his role as Rifleman Daniel Hagman in the globally renown film series Sharpe, for which he was a script associate and also with Dominic Muldowney created the music.
He has recently completed work with Steven Spielberg on the movie of War Horse to be released late 2011 and works closely with the novel’s original author Michael Morpurgo with his own and his wife Sally’s adaptation of the book which is presented in concert form.
A recent BBC Radio 2 version of War Horse featured Timothy Spall, Brenda Blethyn and Bob Hoskins which he directed.

2012 culminated in the band’s award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards for Best Live Act – truly the icing on the cake!
